SQUEEZE THE LEMON, GROW THE PIE – PART 2

 Friday, October 9th, 2009

Well, I hope you enjoyed the first part where we talked about squeezing the lemon. Of course, it’s rare that a sequal ever lives up to the original – but I’ll give it a go.

So this time we’re going to consider the pie; how to grow the pie, specifically. The first part talked about the lemon as your customer base, and the anology of squeezing the lemon was how to get the most juice (business) out of those lemons and not let the lemon shrivel up in the fridge.

So, squeezing the lemon was all about getting the most from your existing customers in a more direct and short term way, and growing the pie is about maximising profit and creating value for both customers and suppliers as part of a longer term strategy. This is done by;

  • Differentiation – what makes you different/better than your customers? Look at; product, pricing, distribution, advertising and promotion, selling, core competencies, competitive advantage, USP’s
  • Added Value – what aspect of your product/service adds real value for the customer?
  • Value Chain – monitor and feedback performance up stream and downstream to continually improve.

The key elements of growing the pie are;

  • Constantly strive to deliver value for the customer by improving your overall proposition.
  • Understand the supply and value chains and learn how to leverage key aspects to create added value and differentiation.
  • Change the mindset of both your company and your customer base. This is more important than immediate short term gains.

So what does The Corporate Gifts Company do to grow it’s pie? Good question, and a challenging one too.  Well, we talk to our customers constantly about how they find our service and product, what they liked and what they didn’t like; we encourage testimonials (good or bad) and we have used that feedback over the past 18 years to hone our service and quality levels so that we give our customers exactly what is most important to them; reliable service, consistent quality (we have the international quality standard ISO9000), appropriate and quality promotional branding, and responsible business practices (see our CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility – policy.

Choosing the right Image or Message to be engraved on your Corporate Gifts

One of the main reasons for promotional gifts is to create an ever lasting image which will stick with people. This is so you then get a chain reaction and end up with existing clients and customers coming to you again and again for there business needs. To do this you need to have an image or company slogan which will help to keep your brand when you are not around to promote it. You need to have a good name or logo on a corporate gift to create that image in someone’s mind.

Your corporate gifts message should be one that reminds people of something good or something they will not forget. The promotional message which is engraved on your gift should be one that people will look at and get an instant reminder of your company. It needs to relate to your company and also reflect the quality of goods that your company supplies. There are 1000’s of messages or text lines which you could choose from but what ever you choose be sure you take the time to make sure that your message will reflect your brand and will give customers a reason to buy from you.

If you were to buy a corporate gifts star award and just engrave it with a small company logo and website address people would always have that image of your company and a way to contact you but they may not remember you and they will have to find your corporate gift to read the companies website address. But if you engraved a promotional message onto the star award as well you would be able to promote using a different marketing tool because of this. If you engraved a good and catchy promotional message your company would be remembered without people even having to look at the corporate gift. It’s like Tesco although it has a huge international brand it is remembered for its promotional message “every little helps” such a simple message but everyone knows that it belongs to Tesco. Engraving a simple but catchy message like the above will mean you can promote and boost your brand in more ways than one.

Although your promotional message is your number 1 concern you also need to remember the other key pointers for corporate gifts which we have placed in another corporate gifts article. Remember your corporate gift needs to reflect your company and your what you are selling. Be sure you read up and get some pointers before you decide what corporate gift is right for your company.
